"EXCITING BATTLE IN NAEBA 2001" saw New Japan return to the Prince Hotel Event Hall in the popular ski resort of Naeba. Although the wrestlers enjoyed skiing while there, they also produced two pro wrestling shows before visitors to the area. A new concept for the mini-series in Naeba was the Naeba Cup Tag Tournament, with a heavyweight/junior vs. heavyweight/junior theme.
Points of note:
(3/23) In the first Naeba Cup Tag Tournament semi final, Nagata & Liger bested Koshinaka & Samurai in over 15 minutes. Liger spiked his long-time ally in the junior division, Samurai, with a brainbuster to march forward.
(3/23) Sasaki & Tanaka also advanced to the final when they downed Iizuka & Makabe in the main event. The recent IWGP Heavyweight Champion and current IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion were too strong for their opposition, Tanaka submitting Makabe with the Minoru Special.
(3/24) Nagata & Liger became the first ever Naeba Cup Tag Tournament winners when they defeated Sasaki & Tanaka in the final. Tanaka was beaten by Nagata, who forced a submission out of his junior opponent with the Nagata Lock II.
