In 2002, it was announced that the G1 Tag League would be replaced for a year by a new concept titled Triathlon Survivor. Featuring four trios', each bout was almost like a 3-in-1 match with a six man tag, regular tag, and singles contest. The trio with the most wins at the end took the match, meaning each installment was important. Although it largely served as a trial for the larger heavyweight version, it was an eventful tournament, with four distinct teams. It would come down to Liger's army against Team 2000, as that heated rivalry continued to boil.
