The all-star nWo Japan duo of Keiji Muto & Masahiro Chono dominated the tag scene in late 1997 until the middle of 1998, holding the IWGP Tag Team Title. However, Muto's continuing knee problems forced them to vacate the belts, setting up a tournament during the "BEST OF THE SUPER JR. 1998" tour. With several hungry teams going for gold, the tournament saw some intense action, but it would be Chono and his young disciple, Hiroyoshi Tenzan, who won the title and began their third reign as champions.

Round 1: Manabu Nakanishi & Satoshi Kojima beat Tatsutoshi Goto & Michiyoshi Ohara (11:28) when Kojima used a lariat on Goto.
Round 1: Kensuke Sasaki & Kazuo Yamazaki beat Michael Wallstreet & Big Titan (12:00) when Yamazaki used a German suplex hold on Titan.
Semi Final: Genichiro Tenryu & Shiro Koshinaka beat Manabu Nakanishi & Satoshi Kojima (14:23) when Tenryu used a powerbomb on Nakanishi.
Semi Final: Masahiro Chono & Hiroyoshi Tenzan beat Kensuke Sasaki & Kazuo Yamazaki (11:23) when Chono used a Yakuza kick on Sasaki.
Final: Masahiro Chono & Hiroyoshi Tenzan beat Genichiro Tenryu & Shiro Koshinaka (19:51) when Tenzan used a diving headbutt on Koshinaka.
