In June, 2006, it was determined that Masahiro Chono would have to undergo an elbow operation that would sideline him for quite a while. As a reigning IWGP Tag Team Champion with Hiroyoshi Tenzan, it put the status of those belts in doubt, as ChoTen had a defense deadline to meet. In case they couldn't meet it, New Japan held a tournament at Korakuen Hall to determine provisional champions. Three teams were tipped to win this one night tournament, but incredibly it would be the fourth team who took home the old IWGP Tag Team Title belts and became provisional champions.
