In September, 2001, a tournament to determine New Japan's strongest foreigner was set up. Designed to be a gaijin version of the annual G1 Climax, five of New Japan's strongest overseas stars went at it in a round-robin tournament, with the winner scheduled to face G1 Climax Champion, Yuji Nagata, in a contendership match for the IWGP Heavyweight Title. Don Frye downed Scott Norton in the final, but due to a PRIDE fight, pulled out of his match with Nagata, so Norton was forced to substitute. The tournament was tentatively due to have a follow-up in 2002, but plans were changed and it didn't take place.
